Kalina’s Blood Runs Blue

As Kalina and Justin walked through the room of walls displaying hundreds perhaps thousands of portraits, Kalina’s heart swelled with the pride of having such history in her veins. Portraits of former Life’s Blood Carriers adorned the entire walls of the large room known as the Wall Room. They were all women, all like Kalina…women whose intelligence balanced out their strength and beauty, women whose beauty alone would attract any man, but whose exquisite blood could stir the desire and obsession of countless vampires. Nikolai led Kalina to stand in front of one of the portraits…that of a young woman with the same colorings as Kalina and the same eyes, but with a hint of mischief and playfulness. Exuding grace and elegance, she was dressed in a stylish modern sleeveless black sheath. Her hair was pinned back into a stylish chignon, and her long neck was slender and pale like a swan’s.

“Who is she?” Kalina asked.

“That, Kalina,” Nikolai said proudly, “was my wife Alexandra Petrov, a Life’s Blood descendent, Russian royalty, and your great aunt.”

“She’s stunning,” Kalina said. “And from what I can see of this portrait, fun-loving, playful, and mysterious.”

“Yes, she certainly was all those things, and much more. She was my world, my obsession. I gladly gave up my immortality for her. At the time I met her, I was the maker and master to thousands of vampires (much like your Octavius), and I had no reason to give that up. But a chance meeting, and one whiff of her Life’s Blood, I wanted nothing more than to be with her, protect her, and make her happy. She loved another at first, but I was persistent…I remained with her, kept her safe from attacking vampires, and eventually, her love for me was true.” Nikolai’s face glowed from cherished memories of this exquisite woman. “It was the happiest day of my vampire existence to find out I was the one she wanted.”

“What happened to her?” Kalina asked.

“She picked me, and we were married in a beautiful ceremony in Athens at night. Soon after, I was turned human by the power of her love and Life’s Blood. If I was not standing in front of you today, I would not have believed this was possible. For days and weeks following our wedding, we have never known such happiness. I was human again, and we were together. I no longer held the need for blood, and I was safe for her to be with all the time. I was much younger than I am today…in my mid-20s, close to Justin’s age and we wanted to start a family right away. Alexandra was in her early 20s, and she wanted to fulfill my lifelong dream of having children (something vampires can never have) by having children immediately. We tried several times for months but she was barren. Finally after a year, she was of child, and we couldn’t be happier…” Nikolai smiled.

“Then what happened?” Justin asked.

“She was killed.” Nikolai’s face darkened.
